The Gospel today calls us to love God above all else, and to love our neighbor as our self.

No surprises with Jesus’ instruction, but plenty of surprise when we examine our life and discover what our practice reveals. One thing seems helpful in growing in our love for God and neighbor – namely, the importance of receiving God’s love.

Have we prayerfully considered the depths of God’s love for me personally? Take a close look at the crucifix. Have I allowed the deepest expression of God’s love for me – namely that Jesus, as God, died for me on the cross – to penetrate my heart? I have received this love of God? Jesus is the one who transforms our hearts for greater love.

Jesus, give us the grace this Lent to love God above all else, and to love my neighbors.
