November 8, 2016; Anchorage, Alaska Holy Family Cathedral, Evening Prayer 1 Dedication of Saint John Lateran Homily; Archbishop – elect Paul D. Etienne Ephesians 2: 19-22 Good evening! Thank you all for being here for this moment of prayer. I wish to welcome in a special way His Excellency, Archbishop Christophe Pierre, The Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, and representative of our Holy Father, Pope Francis. I also wish to give a warm welcome to this Cathedral tonight to Archbishop Schwietz. Archbishop, our reading this evening makes appropriate reference to the fact that we […]

Mall of SVdP Thrift Store in Cheyenne

Early this afternoon, I stopped by our Mall of St. Vincent De Paul Thrift Store in Cheyenne to drop off some items. We have a wonderful resource here in Cheyenne that not only allows us to pass along slightly used items for the benefit of others, but also that uses the proceeds of those items to serve the homeless and poor. St. Vincent De Paul is a non-profit organization that provides clean, desirable, donated items for sale to the public.  Proceeds from sales are passed along each year to help provide meals to the homeless at the Cathedral […]

Priesthood Ordinations Tomorrow; Prayer Service Tonight

Dear Friends, it is with great joy and anticipation that the Diocese of Cheyenne prepares to ordain two new priests. Yesterday I had the delightful pleasure of meeting the parents of one of our deacons.  Deacon Hiep Nguyen and his parents, Joseph and Anna (shown above) came to my residence for a warm visit. Hiep was one of three Vietnamese seminarians studying for the Diocese of Cheyenne when I arrived here five and a half years ago.  This was the first time his parents have come for a visit, and justifiably for the culminating event […]

Chrism Mass Thursday in the Cathedral

This Thursday, we will celebrate the Chrism Mass in the Cathedral in Cheyenne.  For generations, the Chrism Mass in the Diocese of Cheyenne has been held in Casper, due to the more central location.  However, as the Chrism Mass is a celebration manifesting in a unique and beautiful way the unity of the Church, it seems fitting to bring this Mass once again to the Cathedral, which is the church of the Bishop, they symbol of unity in every diocese. The Mass will begin at 5:15 in the Cathedral.  All are welcome!  All are invited!  […]

Cathedral & St. Paul, Pine Bluffs Confirmations

Monday evening 59 young people received the Sacrament of Confirmation at the Cathedral and last night, 11 more from St. Paul in Pine Bluff stepped up to be Confirmed in the fullness of the faith.  I find these celebrations to be invigorating as it is so encouraging to see so many young people desiring to continue their life of faith in Jesus Christ. I believe this is what the New Evangelization is truly all about, people living their faith with greater enthusiasm and joy.  We are called to discover or perhaps re-discover the joy of […]

Election Sunday

Yesterday most Dioceses around the country celebrated the Rite of Election and Call. This is a formal stage of the process of acknowledging the call of our Lord in the life of those who will join the Church as full members this Easter.  The Rite is to be celebrated in the Cathedral wherever possible.  This is significant in that the Cathedral and the Bishop represent the unity of the local Church (Arch/Diocese) as well as its unity with the universal Church.  This is always a beautiful moment as it represents new life in those who […]
