Priests & Leadership of Archdiocese of Anchorage Advance Strategic Planning Process

On Thursday this past week, our strategic planning process received some renewed energy. After Listening Sessions held around the Archdiocese last spring, the Leadership Team (Department Heads of Archdiocesan Staff) spent several months studying and summarizing the results and developed from them the Mission, Vision, Values and a set of Priorities. These were shared with the priests of the Archdiocese on Thursday. Early in his pontificate, Pope Francis issued an Apostolic Exhortation, The Joy of the Gospel in which he lays out his basic vision for advancing the mission of the Church today. In brief points, these are the […]

Year of Mercy: Holy Doors & Open Hearts

In this Year of Mercy, I know many people have had incredible experiences of receiving the Father’s Mercy and of profound encounters with Christ at deeper levels of their lives.  I hope you are taking advantage of this Jubilee Year of Mercy.  Here is just one story I wish to share with you. Someone recently made a visit to the Holy Door at the Sacred Heart Chapel in the Grand Teton National Park. When they arrived, the church was empty, and he had the place to himself. The lights were not on, so it was rather dark and […]

Open To Life: Walking Closely With Christ

In the days of this week when this nation recalls the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade (1973) which legalized abortion, I would like to offer a few reflections. As we face the reality of abortion in this nation, the first thing we are faced with is a legal system (which is made up of men and women) that is willing to be stingy with the truth if not outright lie about what is taking place.  By law, moral and civil, to take the life of any human being is a crime.  Yet, when it comes […]

Two New Transitional Deacons For Cheyenne

On Saturday, April 26, Augustine Carrillo and Hiep Nguyen were ordained transitional deacons at St. Meinrad Archabbey church in Southern Indiana.  Both men are completing their third year of theological studies and will complete their formation next year and will be ordained to the priesthood in June, 2015. Congratulations! Augustine, originally from California, spent some time in the seminary several years ago.  In fact, he and another of our priests, Fr. Jim Heiser, were in seminary together.  Thus, when Fr. Heiser was looking for a new director of religious education a few years ago, he […]

The Joy Of The Gospel & The New Evangelization

As we continue to focus our attention on the New Evangelization, I wish to draw your attention to the recent writing of our Holy Father, Pope Francis.  In November, Pope Francis published his first Apostolic Exhortation, The Joy Of The Gospel.   The first thing I wish to do in this article is encourage all of you to buy a copy of this incredible work and read it, study it, and pray with it.  Pope Francis is quite simply calling every baptized member of the Church to actively and joyfully live their faith. As we have […]

Clergy Institute 2014

Every January, the clergy of the Diocese of Cheyenne gather for a few days of continuing formation, prayer, and fraternal support. This year Fr. Ed Foley came to town to give a workshop on presiding.  Before the official program begins, we gather for an opportunity to cover some business items. This year, I took the opportunity to draw the attention of our priests and deacons to some of the insights gleaned from the recent survey conducted on family in light of the new evangelization.  These topics line up nicely with the challenges proposed by out Holy […]
