Priesthood Ordination Homily

Below follows the homily given at the priesthood ordination ceremony for the newest member of the Diocese of Cheyene clergy, Rev. Tim Martinson. Hopefully, some good pictures of the event will follow soon. Priesthood Ordination Homily, May 24, 2010 Most Reverend Paul D. Etienne, Worland, Wyoming My dear brother, Tim, brother priests, family and friends gathered here today for this solemn ordination ceremony. As we prepare to receive our brother Tim into the order of Priests, let us reflect upon the nature of this office of the Church. We look first of all to the […]

Veni, Sancte Spiritus

Veni, Sancte Spiritus! This is the great prayer of the Church as we enter into this celebration of Pentecost. Over the past several days I have prayed a Novena to the Holy Spirit, and have been inspired numerous times in recalling the many ways the Holy Spirit is at work in the Church. Several Scripture passages are helpful in recalling the great work of the Holy Spirit which I would like to review with you. During his prayer at the Last Supper, Jesus asked the Father to give the Holy Spirit to his disciples, the […]

May, Month of Mary

When I was growing up, we had a plaque hanging somewhere in the house that read: “The greatest gift a father can give his children, is to love their mother.”  In many ways, I believe this is similarly true for priests and bishops with regards to our love for Mary.  One of the greatest gifts we can give the people entrusted to our pastoral care is to love our Blessed Mother.  When I was a seminarian in Rome, I had the opportunity to meet Blessed Mother Theresa of Calcutta.  One morning, I attend Mass with […]

Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky?  This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven.  (Acts 1:11) It is hard for us to get our head and hearts around the mystical reality that Jesus is both “with the Father in heaven”, and yet still very much with us through the Church, living and dwelling in all who believe.  Yet, this is the reality and truth.  This is why it is so important for […]

With the recent celebration of Mother’s Day, and the upcoming celebration of Father’s Day, I count it a pure joy and distinct blessing to have had my parents visit Wyoming this past several days for some time “with their son”.  Pictured to the left are mom and pop, Paul & Kay Etienne.  With all the winter weather around the state of Wyoming this past week, we fortunately dodged all the snow and rain.  This picture was taken at the Lower Falls in Yellowstone Park.  June 1 they will celebrate 53 years of marriage.  They are […]

Confirmation Message

With one more Confirmation Mass to go this season, I’d like to share the common message I’ve shared with all those Confirmed this season.  The readings for the Easter Season, as well as those of the Rite of Confirmation are powerful, and have much to teach us about what God is up to in our life as Catholic Christians. The first chapter of Paul’s letter to the Ephesians tells us so much of God’s perfect and eternal plan. God, the Father “has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens, and chose us in him, before […]

Renewing The Church

Yesterday, while meeting with a group of parish leaders from St. Paul in Pine Bluff, a woman asked: “How do I get my kids to go to Church? They think it is boring.”  I believe she said her kids were 10, 6, and 4.  I responded, “First of all, we must be realistic; Mass for most kids today is boring.”  Please read on.  Obviously, I and the Church do not believe the Mass is boring.  We believe the Mass is a rich expression of the life and love that are ours in the Risen Christ!  For […]
