As you know, many East Asian countries celebrate Lunar New Year, which this year was Friday, February 12. This weeks long celebration is a strong part of the culture and tradition of our Vietnamese Catholic community in the Archdiocese. I had hoped to join the Vietnamese Martyrs Catholic community for this celebration last Saturday, but due to the snow storm we received, I was unable to join them.
This past Sunday, as a part of the ongoing celebration of the New Year, the community honored their senior members. I’m glad I was able to be present for the Sunday Mass with them. Honoring our parents and grandparents and the wisdom they hold is a beautiful tradition, and one we all can learn from!
I’m grateful to Fr. Thanh Dao, pastor of Vietnamese Martyrs parish for his invitation, but especially for the great work of accompanying these parishioners in developing a new parish, honoring their culture and heritage, and strengthening their faith. The Church of the Archdiocese of Seattle is blessed by the presence of so many different cultures, and the richness of faith they bring to this local family of faith.
Congratulations to all who celebrate the Lunar New Year in this Year of the Ox!
