Stained glass window of St. Mark; St. James Cathedral, Seattle

We celebrate today the Feast of St. Mark, Evangelist. I cannot help but think that Mark lived as a great witness to Christ before, or at least, while he was writing his Gospel.

Once again in this Easter season we hear the great commission of Jesus:

Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. (Mark 16:15-16)

This great mission of the Church is now ours! Witness of life is the greatest proclamation to the person of Jesus. May our lives help others encounter, know, believe in and follow Jesus.

Mark also kept great company as a disciple. Perhaps very few if any such cohorts have existed since: St. Peter, St. Paul, St. Barnabas along with St. Mark traveled and preached as Jesus commanded. We, too, would do well to keep good company in our pilgrimage of life.

Today’s Mass and Homily:
