Come To The Lord; Take Courage, Jesus Is Calling You

Both of today’s readings are great reminders to come to Jesus and to remain in him. Today’s Gospel recalls another journey of Jesus, this time he is passing through Jericho with his disciples.  Sitting along the side of the road is a blind man, Bartimaeus.  The man, hearing that Jesus is passing by, begins crying out: “Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.” (Mark 10:47)  He has such faith that he knows and believes Jesus can heal him.  He has such humility, he does not care who hears him cry out in his need. Jesus […]

Peter Renews His Love For The Risen Lord; The Risen Lord Identifies Love With Service

Today’s Gospel (John 21:1-19) is one of my favorites.  In John’s Gospel this is the third time that Jesus appears to the disciples after being raised from the dead.  I believe it took all three appearances for the disciples to finally fully understand the significance of the resurrection for their lives. Immediate conversions are rare, and so it was for the disciples.  Their hearts were broken after Jesus’ crucifixion and burial.  Their hopes for the future were dashed, leaving them confused and disillusioned.  There was a process involved in which even the Risen Lord needed […]

The Healing Presence of Christ

In the readings for this 23rd Sunday in Ordinary time, Jesus’ healing of a man who is deaf and mute is a clear fulfillment of the words of the Prophet Isaiah in the first reading. On one level, Jesus is telling the people by his actions that he is the promised Messiah. Here is your God, he comes with vindication; with divine recompense he comes to save you.  Then will the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared; then will the lame leap like a stag, then the tongue […]

Only In, With, and Through Christ Do We Truly ‘See’

In today’s Gospel (Mark 8:22-26), people brought him a blind man, begging that He lay his hands upon him that he might regain his sight.  After Jesus performs the miracle of restoring this man’s sight, Mark tells us: his sight was restored and he could see everything distinctly. Surely, many people today stand in need of physical healing.  Providentially, many professionals serve the physical, medical needs of great numbers of people in the world today.  They are no doubt the hands through which Jesus continues to bring such attention and care to so many today.  […]

Jesus’ Healing Recognizes the Integral Whole of the Human Person

In Mark’s Gospel, as elsewhere, we hear Jesus refer quite often to the human heart. One such passage we read during Mass earlier this week when Jesus quoted the Prophet Isaiah:  This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts.   Later in the same Chapter 7 Jesus says:  But what comes out of the man, that is what defiles him.  From within the man, from his heart, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, […]
