Homily For Vigil Of Archbishop Daniel M. Buechlein, OSB

Homily: Vigil Prayer Service For Archbishop Daniel M. Buechlein, OSB Archbishop Paul D. Etienne, January 30, 2018, Cathedral of Saints Peter & Paul, Indianapolis Psalm 121 – 130 – Philippians 2:6-11 – 1 Corinthians 15: 51-57 Archbishop Buechlein is now experiencing the truth of what he preached in and with his life: “Death is swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” (1 Corinthians 15: 55) +Daniel’s work in the Lord was not in vain, and his reward is in Christ, Risen from the dead. The priesthood, […]

Rest In Peace, Mom: Carolyn (Kay) Agnes Voges Etienne (1935-2018)

After 60 years of marriage and 82 years of life, mom’s journey of faith reached its goal Sunday evening around 7:30pm. I think she must have scripted the ending. By God’s providence, I was already in Southern Indiana rather than Alaska when we put her in the hospital Friday evening.  After approximately a nine year battle with Alzheimer’s, and a thyroid crisis, she went into a comatose-like state, and was unable to communicate anymore. But, the human heart at the core of our being, surely allowed her to be aware of the presence of the […]

Archbishop Emeritus Daniel M. Buechlein, OSB; The Good Shepherd & Good Steward (1938 – 2018)

Months before I was named the Eighth Bishop of Cheyenne, I was appointed by Archbishop Buechlein as the Pastor of my home parish, St. Paul in Tell City. Prior to my departure for Cheyenne, one of the last Masses I celebrated with my home parish was their 150th anniversary.  Archbishop Buechlein presided and I preached. At the end of Mass, before the final blessing, he made some flattering remarks about my appointment.  He spoke of stewardship, of sacrificial giving; that the parish and the Archdiocese were now giving ‘one of our best’ to serve the […]

Institution Of Acolytes

For the past four and a half years, a group of men have faithfully gathered one weekend a month to participate in the formation program for permanent deacons.  Last night, the five men who remain received the ministry of acolyte; the last formal step before being ordained deacons in May.  They have three more formation weekends before ordination.  They and their family and friends who gathered with them last night are quite excited to have reached this stage of formation! Please pray for these men in the coming months that they may serve the Lord […]

There Is Power In The Name Of Jesus

When I came to Alaska, I had no idea they experienced so many earthquakes.  There are numerous tremors daily. Many Alaskans have apps on their phones just to track the size and number of these events. In the fourteen months I’ve lived here, I have felt at least three earthquakes. Along with the earthquakes, there are also a few active volcanos in the state. Last year, one of them blew several times, causing air travel disruptions and cancellations due to the ash plume.  As you might expect, with these events also come tsunamis, and there […]

A Church Of Hope: Ours Is A Time Of Rebuilding

In recent months, I’ve been prayerfully asking: “What kind of Church is God calling us to be today?” I believe that much of the answer lies in the papacy of Pope Francis. As St. Francis himself was called to ‘Renew my Church” I believe we are being called to a renewal in our time by this Pope. I’m all in! As a new year begins, I wish to share with you some basic components of where we will be directing our energies in the foreseeable future. Already planning is underway to schedule a series of […]
