Lent’s Return To The Lord: Love and Mercy – Not Sacrifice

Once again, today we are encouraged by the Prophet Hosea to return to the Lord. God desires love, not burnt offerings. God wants us to seek him above all else. The Psalm (51) today reminds us that God desires mercy, not sacrifice. Jesus through his passion and death on the Read more…

Give Up Everything For Jesus; Gain Everything In Return

In Today’s Gospel (Mark 10: 28-31), Peter begins a conversation with Jesus, saying: “We have given up everything to follow you.” If Jesus had not interrupted Peter, one wonders where this thought was leading … Perhaps once again, Jesus saves Peter from putting his foot in his mouth. Regardless, as Read more…

The Desert As A Place Of Privileged Encounter With God

On this First Sunday of Lent, our readings today take us from the Garden of Eden to the Desert. As the season of Lent always does, we are reminded today of the reality of sin and its consequences.  In our first reading today, Genesis tells us that in the beginning Read more…

Lent: The Church’s Annual Retreat

Now that another Lenten journey has begun I am ready for this annual moment of grace and renewal, and pray you are as well. St. Paul in the second reading at today’s Mass encourages us to “be reconciled to God.” That in a nutshell sums up the call of this Read more…

Archbishop Etienne's Welcome Mass in Seattle

Welcome to my blog, and thanks for visiting! I became the Archbishop of Seattle on September 3, 2019 after serving as Coadjutor Archbishop of Seattle from June 7, 2019. Prior to that, I served 2 and a half years as Archbishop of Anchorage, 7 years as the Bishop of Cheyenne and many more as a priest of the Archdiocese of Indianpolis.

Preaching is a priority for my episcopal ministry, and this blog is my humble effort to engage the New Evangelization and to serve you, God’s holy, faithful people! Enjoy your visit, and together, may we grow in truth and love.

Our Lady of Seattle, pray for us
